Yixing Teapots

Yixing (pronounced “ee-shing”) Teapots fist appeared in the Yixing region of China during the Sung Dynasty (960-1279), when unique purple clay (Zisha) was first discovered in that area. Since then, they have become the preferred tea brewing vessel of the Chinese and of tea drinkers worldwide. Yixing teapots are intended for individual use, producing 1-2 servings of tea. Certified lead-free, the purple clay has unique properties that are ideal for brewing tea. The unique color of the clay, sometimes augmented by pigments, is never covered by glazes on a Yixing teapot. Even the inside is left uncoated. The porous nature of the clay absorbs the flavor, smell, and color of the tea that is brewed in it. From repeated use, Yixing teapots develop a seasoning, making the tea brewed from a well used teapot a treat.

To clean this type of teapot, simply empty the leaves and rinse the teapot with hot water. Never use soaps or cleansers, as they may be absorbed by the porous clay and interfere with the taste of your tea.
